Excerpts from the Lars John Redberg Diaries of 1909 - 1912 of Life in South Tillamook County especially of Oretown, Oregon.
Edna Redberg very kindly excerpted these interesting portions of the Lars John Redberg Diaries and provided them to NVMS. Nestucca Valley Middle School students typed these excerpts during the fall of 2002 as part of their technology classes. Note that the complete diaries of Lars John Redberg spanning many years are in the Pioneer Museum in Tillamook, Oregon. They were donated by Erwin and Edna Redberg.
The following diary entries were typed by BeaJae, 8th grader, and Ben H., 7th grader, during the fall of 2002 and were edited by Dean Bones.
Page 9 - January 1909 - October 5, 1909Oct. 11, 1910 - I hauled 11 cases of cheese to the dock
Oct. 15, 1910 - Mr. and Mrs. Neururer, Ralph Bunn, Maude Franklin, Gertrude, Herbert and I all went to Cloverdale today. Spent the evening and the night at Porter's.
Oct. 18, 1910 - Ole and I hauled one load of 600 bricks in barrels from Cloverdale Dock to Emma Ward's new house. The bricks weighed 2800 lbs. He had one load of 36 water soaked bunches of shingles from the Cannery Dock to Slab Creek for Dan Fry.
Oct. 21, 1910 - I started for Sheridan this morning with Pete and Camille Neururer. They are going to live in Portland now. I had a wagon load of their trunks and household effects. We stayed at Irve Hussie's this night 7:30.
Oct. 22, 1910 - We arrived at Sheridan at 10:00 A.M. today. Pete and Camille left for Portland on the 2:40 train. I left at 4 o'clock for home. Stayed at Hartman's. I had 1350 lbs. of freight on my wagon.
Oct. 23,1910 - Left Hartman's this A.M. at 7:15 and arrived home at 9:15 P.M. Roads very bad.
Oct. 25, 1910 - I hauled lumber again for Jessie Ward and Rutger today. (Have been hauling lumber many days for each "James Ward,""Jessie Ward," and "Rutgers.")
Oct. 30, 1910 - Our children have been sick for the last 10 days or more. They are improving some now. Gertrude and I are sick now.
Oct. 31, 1910 - Ole's children are sick now too, and also Porter's. Mrs. Porter's waiting on and doctoring us at present.
Nov. 2, 1910 - Ole hauled about 900 feet of lumber from Weiss Mill for Will Ward.
Nov. 3, 1910 - Gertrude is better and Viola is a bit worse. I am not strangling so bad as I did. Jessie Follett was here all day doing the work. She was a good help.
Nov. 6, 1910 - Ole and Father went to Cloverdale today. Father had three teeth pulled by Dr. Davenport.
Nov. 7, 1910 - Ole hauled lumber today for Will and Jessie Ward and got home late as he broke the wagon reach and upset on the "S" hill. We are all a little better today.
